Twelve Thousand
Hectares.
Red-earth country, Northern Sumatra. Fast-rotation eucalyptus and acacia grown for the fiber demands of Southeast Asia's paper mills.
The Long Season
Twenty-three years of planting, growing, and harvesting — told in the order it happened.
First Seedlings in Laterite
Twelve hectares of cleared red-earth country, Northern Sumatra. Ahmad Nasution and his two brothers press the first Eucalyptus pellita seedlings into soil that stains boots the colour of old brick. The ground is poor by agricultural standards — acidic, fast-draining, low in organic matter. For eucalyptus, it is ideal.

First Rotation Complete
Three years from planting, the first coppice rotation yields 180 tonnes of pulpwood — 15 tonnes per hectare, exceeding the feasibility projection by 8%. The wood is loaded onto lorries before dawn and hauled 340 kilometres to the Indah Kiat mill at Perawang. The mill's head of procurement, Siti Rahayu, sends a single-line note: "Quality acceptable. Expand."
Acacia Intercrop Programme
Agronomist Dr. Priya Subramaniam joins the operation and introduces Acacia mangium into the western sectors — plots P-03, P-06, and P-08. The mixed-species approach reduces pest pressure, improves nitrogen fixation in the laterite profile, and allows the mill partnerships to offer both hardwood and softwood fiber grades from a single supply origin.
FSC Chain-of-Custody Certification
After eighteen months of audit preparation, Pulpwood receives FSC FM/COC certification — number FSC-C142887. Every tree now carries a GPS coordinate traceable through the supply chain. The certification opens procurement conversations with Mondi, Sappi, and three packaging conglomerates in South Korea who require verified chain-of-custody documentation for their sustainability reporting.
Expansion to 8,000 Hectares
Land tenure agreements with three neighbouring landholders — the Siregar, Manurung, and Hutabarat families — add 4,200 hectares under long-term lease. The expanded estate now spans two river catchments and four soil classification zones. A new nursery produces 2.4 million seedlings annually using clonal propagation from the highest-yielding parent stock.
Current Estate: 12,410 Certified Hectares
The ninth plot sector — P-09, 830 hectares of E. urophylla in the eastern ridge country — completes the current estate configuration. Annual yield has reached 186,000 tonnes of pulpwood. Three mill partnerships now operate on rolling 24-month supply contracts. The plantation produces both kraft-grade and dissolving-grade fiber, with moisture content and basic density specifications available on request.
